From the Confessions: The Small Catechism
The Third Commandment
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
What does this mean?
Answer: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise his Word and the preaching of it, but acknowledge it as holy, and gladly hear and learn it.
Pulling It Together: The Sabbath of the old covenant observed God’s completion of creation. The Sabbath of the new covenant celebrates recreation—that people are recreated, or born again, through faith in Christ. This new life is the beginning of our inheritance of the imperishable life (1 Pet 1:3–4). We worship him who has provided us with a living hope of resurrection from the dead. The Holy Spirit stirs up this hope in us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This is what we celebrate on the Lord’s Day, the day Christ Jesus rose from the dead. And that is why we observe the first day instead of the last day. We are celebrating a new beginning, eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Help me remember your resurrection every day, Lord, and have an ever-living hope in you. Amen.
